Subwoofer Amplifiers

Most freestanding subwoofers are active, meaning they have a built-in amplifier, whereas in-wall, in-ceiling, outdoor, and some freestanding subwoofers are passive and therefore require external amplification. Since an AV receiver never powers a subwoofer directly, it is necessary to have additional amplification for passive subwoofers.
